Marcus Gilmore (born 1986) was inspired by the music of his grandfather, legendary drummer Roy Haynes, who gave him his first set of drums at the age of 10. He took naturally to jazz as well as classical theory and percussion. Already one of New York’s most in-demand young drummers at age 24, he has recorded and performed extensively around the world with some of today’s best known contemporary artists, including Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Vijay Iyer, Natalie Cole, Clark Terry, Nicholas Payton, John Patitucci, Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ravi Coltrane, Terence Blanchard, , Roy Hargrove, Raul Midon and many others. He has also been repeatedly featured in world renown publications such as The New York Times, DownBeat Magazine, and Modern Drummer. This past fall he joined the Private Instruction Faculty at the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
